Nutrient Collapse

This is (mostly) a trail web space, but sometimes I share other stories. This story on plants isn’t a feel-good story, but how much of the news is not sad as of late? At any rate, plants have been getting more carbon dioxide since the industrial revolution. The result, “measurements of fruits and vegetables show that their minerals, vitamin and protein content has measurably dropped over the past 50 to 70 years.” Plants are growing faster due to higher CO2 concentrations and the rate throws the ratio of carbon/carbohydrates to other nutrients towards the former. Is this also a reason insects (including bees) are dying off worldwide? More carbs, less nutrition, or less nutrient dense foods. The trail ahead looks rugged my friends and fiends. Hopefully we change course and build a sustainable route to the future.
