After some construction on the original segment of the Appalachian Trail (now Major Welch), and the Upper East Face of the Appalachian Trail at Bear Mountain, I began work at Sterling Forest. It began with trail inventory hikes, then moved to trail construction and future layout/design on the Doris Duke Trail.
After seeing the documentary film Harlan County USA (movie on youtube), and realizing Doris’ father’s wealth was obtained through death and theft via tobacco (for a time as a monopoly), hydroelectric and coal I can’t say I feel too good about this trail . The only good thing about the Charitable Foundation is they are giving away money for good causes, but some (if not most) of that money is not theirs to give away if you consider how it was (un)earned.
